Richard Pappe's Saloon in Kingfisher, OK - About 1905

This is probably Richard Pappe Sr's. saloon in the east side of the 300 block of North Main Street in Kingfisher, OK. The bar and display cases appear to be the same as those in the 1901 saloon photo. There is a large Anheuser-Busch poster on the wall at the back of the bar and the man behind the bar wearing a hat appears to be Richard Pappe Sr.

This photo was shown in the 75th anniversary edition of the Kingfisher Free Press, published in April 1964. The caption under the photo reads:

"Illuminated by the large hanging kerosene lamp, this bar did business in the 300 block North Main street, in the second building south of the Times and Free Press. Shown behind the long bar, which ran east and west, are R. Pappe Sr., and his son Albert [see below]. After statehood in 1907 brought prohibition, the business was converted to a cafe. A feature of the establishment was a dumb-waiter to carry food to the second floor. Albert Pappe died in 1908 [sic], his father in 1919. Court Pappe Jr. of Oklahoma City loaned the picture.",

Other photos of Albert Pappe look quite different from the bartender in this photo so he may have been incorrectly identified. Enlarging the photo shows him to have wavy dark hair, large ears and a long hooked nose. Albert had straight blonde hair, and small ears and a shorter nose, wide at the bridge. This same bartender can be seen in the Pappe-Bollenbach photo.
