Richard and Louise Pappe

Richard and Louise Pappe in Kansas - early 1885

This photo of Richard and Louise Pappe appears to have been taken in the same photo studio as the 1884 photo. (There are no photographer's marks, but the studio backdrop, paper, printing style, and photo aging are identical.)

The older child is likely Albert Pappe, who was born in Newton in July 1883 and was baptized there in August 1883 by a traveling preacher named A. S. Teutschel of the German Evangelical Reform church. Albert appears to be about a year old in the photo, which puts the date at late 1884 or early 1885. The cut of Louise's dress is also consistent with this time frame.

The identity of the other infant, probably born in late 1884, is unknown. We have found no records of its birth or baptism. The the child probably died shortly after this photo was taken because it was no longer with the family by March 1, 1885 when the Kansas state census was taken.
