Richard and Louise Pappe

Richard Pappe and Louise Kornrumpf - about 1880

This is the earliest known photo of Richard Pappe Sr. (1860-1919) and his wife, Louise Kornrumpf Pappe (1861-1941). The photo was taken in Goettingen, Germany, where Louise lived prior to their marriage. We don't know how the couple met. Perhaps Richard moved to Goettingen to complete his apprenticeship or later when he became a journeyman baker.

Louise was born in Gross Lengden, a small village a few kilometers from Goettingen. In July 1875 when Louise had just turned 14, she moved to Goettingen to work as a maid (Magd in German). According to the family books in the Goettingen city archive, she lived at Rothestrasse 16 and then in July 1879 she moved to Wendenstrasse 40 — just a few houses away from her older brother Herman's residence. There is no record of Louise in the archive after that date.
