Carl Arthur Pappe

Carl Arthur Pappe Passport Photo - April 1929

This is the only photograph we have of Carl Arthur Pappe as an adult. It was taken from his 1929 passport application . On the application he wrote that he planned to visit Germany to visit relatives, departing May 28 from Galveston Texas on the SS York. Ship's passenger documents show that he was traveling with his wife, Elsie (Niens) Pappe and that they returned to the US in August, sailing from Bremen, Germany to New York.

Carl died suddenly of a heart attack at age 48 just two years after this photo was taken, leaving a widow, two adopted daughters (from his fist marriage) and a two month old son, Carl August Pappe.

The passport application has other information about Carl, such as:

  • Birth: 2 March 1883 in Leipzig, Germany
  • Immigration: October 1900 [he subsequently returned to Germany, immigrating a second time in 1903 via Canada]
  • Residende: t 520 N. Central, Albuquerque, NM
  • Lived in Albuquerque since 1906 [previously in Nebraska]
  • Physical attributes: 5 ft. 11 in. tall, blonde-gray hair, gray eyes
