Carl Arthur Pappe - about 1888

This photo of Carl Arthur Pappe (1883 - 1931) is from the photo collection of Louise Pappe Jersak. The photo was taken in Leipzig, Germany when Carl was about five or six years old. In the photo he is holding either a book or certificate, perhaps to indicate some important milestone such as his first day of school.

The back of the photo reveals information about the photographer. The address for the Eulenstein photo studio is given as Zeitzer-Str. 30, Haus vor dem Tivoli (house in front of the Tivoli), Leipzig.  Zeitzer (renamed Karl-Leibknecht Str. in 1939) is located south of the Leipzig city center (Zentrum). The Tivoli was once the largest beer hall in Germany, with 5000 seats*. Sometime between 1883 and 1886 the Karl Pappe family moved to Dufor Str. 10, Leipzig, which is only a few blocks from the Eulenstein photo studio.

It's possible that Carl's uncle, Richard Pappe Sr., of Kingfisher, OK was given this photo when he traveled with his family to Leipzig, Germany in the winter of 1888-1889 to attend the baptism of Carl's younger brother, also named Richard.

* The Voklshaus now occupies the old Tivoli building at Krl-Leibknech-Strasse 32. Click here for Google map.
