Carl Arthur Pappe was born in Leipzig on March 02, 1883 in Leipzig, Germany. The eldest of five children, he was the son of Karl Friedrich Ludwig Pappe (1857-?) and Auguste Pappe (1858-1928). We do not yet know Auguste's maiden name. He went by several names throughout his life, including Arthur, Carl or simply C.A. Pappe.

In 1900 Carl's uncle Albert Ludwig Pappe, who had immigrated in 1872, returned to Germany to visit relatives. Carl accompanied his uncle when he returned to the US in October 1900, departing from Hamburg on October 4th and arriving in New York on the 15th on the SS Furst Bismarck. The Hamburg, Germany passenger index lists his occupation as Konditorgeselle ( journeyman confectioner) and indicates that he was on traveling under a military travel pass. The ship's manifest also notes that he was a confectioner and that he was traveling with his uncle. Shortly after the pair arrived in the US, Albert wrote to his brother, Richard Pappe Sr. in Kingfisher and mentioned that "Karl's Arthur came with me, but I don't know yet what he wants to do." (See letter)

Carl's Declaration of Intent to become a naturalized citizen states that he arrived in October 1900. However, we believe he returned to Germany after vising in the US, finished his military service, and immigrated permanently in 1903. According to his 1927 Petition for Naturalizaton, he arrived in the US on the Canadiian Pacific Railroadm departing from Winnepeg, Canada and arriving on October 15, 1903 in Detroit, Michigan.

Carl lived for a time in Hastings, Nebraska, which is about 150 miles west of where his uncle Albert Pappe lived until about 1904. Carl married his first wife, Anna, about 1906. We don't know Anna's maiden name, but do know that she had a son from a previous marriage named Walter Ray Forst (1893-1956), who was born in Omaha, Nebraska and became a baker in Albuquerque.

In September 1908 Carl and Anna moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico (see clipping.). The 1910 census shows the couple living with two adopted daughters Thelma Pappe (1899-) and Lucille Pappe (1903-), both born in Illinois. When Carl's estate was settled in 1932, the probate notice mentions "Thelma Pappe (before adoption named Thelma Weisenborn, now Singer)." There is no mention of Lucille.

Within two years Carl had opened a bakery in Albuquerque. Pappe's Bakery was well known and Carl was successful and well respected in his field. During WW-I he was appointed to head the bakery division of the New Mexico State Food Administration, a controversial appointment because of his alien status (see clipping). Walter R Forst's WW I draft registration states that he worked at Pappe's bakery and the 1920 census shows him living with Carl and Anna Pappe. Carl and Anna apparently divorced some time after 1920 because in about 1926 he married for a second time.

In 1921 Carl returned to Leipzig, Germany for a visit. When he returned to the US in October, his mother Auguste Pappe, a widow, was with him. We know that Auguste spent some time with her son, Arno Curt Pappe, who had immigrated in 1910 and probably lived for a time with Carl. Auguste died in 1928 and is buried in Albuquerque, near Carl.

After living in the US as an alien for over 20 years, Carl decided in 1924 to become a naturalized citizen and filed a Declaration of Intent . Then in 1927 he became an American citizen.

About 1926 he married Elsbeth "Elsie" Niens. Elsie was from Celle, Germany, which is in the north between Hamburg and Hannover.

In 1929 Carl again returned to Germany but this time it was with his second wife, Elsbeth Niens Pappe. We are not sure where he went in Germany, but know that he and Elsie arrived back in New York on August 4th.

In September 1931 Elsie gave birth to a son, Carl August Pappe. Just two months later, on the 12th of November, Carl Arthur Pappe suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Albuquerque. (see obitary)

Carl's son, Carl August Pappe. and his widow, Elsie Pappe, later moved to New Hampshire. Elsie died in Hudson NH in 1978.
