Richard Pappe's Bakery in Enid, OT - about 1895

At some point, Richard Pappe opened a bakery in Enid, Oklahoma Territory. Inside the front cover of a book that belonged to Richard's son, Albert Pappe, we found two imprints of a rubber stamp that described the business. The stamp reads:

“Vienna” Bakery, Confectionery & Restaurant
??? of FINE CIGARS
DEALER
BEST BRANDS OF WINES & LIQUORS

North Enid, O.T. _______________189

The space at the end of the date implies that the the business was operating during the 1890s. Since the Cherokee strip was not opened for settlement until September 1893, we know that it was after that date. In the 1890s, North Enid was a separate settlement from Enid. We don't know exactly where the business was located. The Garfield County Genealogists can find no mention of a Pappe business in their files; however, Richard Pappe's death notice states that he lived in Enid for a while after the 1889 Opening. (See clipping).

The book in which we found the stamps is called Child's Health Primer and is the first volume of the Pathfinder series. The book describes how to live a healthy lifestyle and warns of the dangers of tobacco and alcohol (click here to read full text of book). Assuming that Albert Pappe was 10 to 14 years old when his parents gave him the book to read, the time frame for the business is 1893-1897. Albert worked in Richard's saloons and restaurants until he was set up in his own business in Kingfisher. He died in 1909.

A baker's trunk for the North Enid business was passed down to Richard's great granddaughter, Nancy Jersak Henderson. The trunk is inscribed:

To:
Chet C. Helton
Medford O.T.

When empty
Return to
R. Pappe
N. Enid O.T.

Medford is a town 30 miles north of Enid and is the Grant County seat. Both were stops on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad line, that came through the area in the 1889-90 time frame. Kingfisher is 38 miles south of Enid.
