Richard Pappe's Passport Application - 1889
Emergency Passport issued in Leipzig, Germany

Richard Pappe and family left for Germany on September 1, 1888, just a few months after he became an American Citizen. The following March he applied for an "emergency" passport at the US consulat in Leipzig Germany. We don't know why he did that, but perhaps he didn't know that he would need a passport (not just his naturalization certificate) in order to be treated as a US citizen upon his return. The nformation in the document is transcribed below.

February 21, 1889

I, Richard Pappe, a naturalized and loyal citizen of the United States, do hereby apply to the Legation of the United States at Berlin for a passport for myself and wife Louise and my minor children as follows:  Albert born at Newton Kansas on the 26th day of July, 1883; and Richard, born at Pratt, Kansas; 30th day of June 1887.

In support of the above application, I do solemnly swear that I was born at Stotternheim L [Landkreis] Erfurt, Prussia on the 5the day of December, 1860; that I emigrated to the United States, sailing on board the Peter De Conick, from Hamburg, the 11th day of March 1883, and arriving at New York the 1st day of April 1882; that I resided five years uninterruptedly in the United States, from April 1882 to Sept. 1888 in Pratt Kansas; that I was naturalized as a citizen of the United States before the District Court of Reno County Kansas, at Hutchison, on the 20th day of August, 1888, as shown by the accompanying certificate of naturalization; that I am the identical person referred to in said certificate; that I am domiciled in the United States, my permanent residence therein being at Pratt, in the State of Kansas, where I follow the occupation of a baker; that I last left the United States on the 1st day of September, 1888, on board the Etruria, arriving in Liverpool on the 8th day of September, 1888; that I have resided in Leipsic [Leipzig] since the 1st day of November, 1888; that I am now temporarily residing at Leipsic; and that I intend to return to the United States 27th day of Febr. 1889 with a purpose of residing and performing the duties of citizenship there. I desire the passport for the purpose of traveling.  

OATH OF ALLEGIANCE.
Further, I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so HELP ME GOD.
