Invitation to a Baptism - 1889

from Carl Pappe to Richard Pappe

This invitation was sent from Carl Pappe (1857-?) in Leipzig, Germany to his younger brother Richard Pappe (1960-1919) in Pratt, Kansas, inviting Richard to be a witness at the baptism of Carl’s son. The name of the child is not known, but it is possibly named after Richard Pappe as it was common to name the child after the witness/godparent.

In September 1888 Richard Pappe traveled to Germany with his wife Louise and two sons. In February 1889 Richard applied for a passport at the US Consulate in Leipzig, stating that his permanent residence was Pratt, Kansas, that he had resided in Leipzig since 1 November 1888, and planned to return to the USA on 27 February 1889.   Richard and Carl's mother, Katherine Heinemann Pappe', accompanied the family on their return voyage to America. Two months later, Richard Pappe filed a homestead claim in Oklahoma Territory.
