John Hermann Pappe's Bakeries in Newton, Kansas

John Hermann Pappe immigrated in 1872 and lived several years in Illinois. In 1875 he married Mary Drayer and the couple moved to Missouri, where her family lived. John is first mentioned in the Newton newspaper in 1880. He owned or worked in many bakeries over his lifetime in several states. John left Newton several times to work mining claims but later returned and worked again as a baker. By 1889 he had moved west to Coolidge, Kansas and by 1892 he was in Denver, Colorado.

The Newton Kansan, February 26,1880

Mr. J. H. Pappe, from Macon, Mo. will next Monday open a first class bakery and restaurant in the old Fisher House rooms, one door south of the National Hotel. Mr. Pappe is an experienced baker, and is now having his oven built ready for business.

H. Pappe has sold out his bakery and gone to California.

H. Pappe has returned to Newton again and will establish a candy manufactory in Marsh’s new building on Fifth street, as soon as it’s finished.

J. H. Pappe will next Monday open a bakery, confectionery and restaurant at his old brick store stand on West Fourth street.

J. H. Pappe is now operating a claim in Edwards county.
