Gervase John “Gerry” Eischeid 1919-1997

Gerry John, son of George and Mathilda Olbertz Eischeid, was born May 1, 1919, at Halbur, Iowa. He attended rural schools near his home. On November 21, 1939, Gerry was united in marriage with Leona Mary Reising at Breda. Fifteen children were born to his union. They farmed in the Carroll area until 1952 when they moved to Guthrie Center. Gerry continued to farm until 1959 when he began to work with heavy construction equipment. In 1979 they moved to Bayard and he retired shortly thereafter.

Gerry was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish in Bayard, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus at one time. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Texas for fifteen years until two years ago when his health began to fail. His wife and family were able to care for him at home.

Gerry died on Wednesday, December 17, 1997, at him home in Bayard, Iowa, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 15 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Sandra Eischeid in 1944 and Gail Smith in 1996; one grandson, Troy Eischeid; one granddaughter, Nicole Capps; two great grandsons, Joshua Smith and Johnathon [sic] Jensen; a son-in-law, Larry Smith; three brothers; Stanley, George, and Walter Eischeid; and one sister, Pearl Wittemeyer.

Gerry is survived by his wife Leona of Bayard; by thirteen children: Marietta and her husband, Don Worshek, of Bayard; Carlene and her husband, Chuck Jensen of Conway, MO; Judee and her husband, Jim Vaughan of Yale; Carol and her husband, Lyle Laughery of Guthrie Center; Joyce and her husband, Dennis Betts of Coon Rapids; Lois and her husband, Lanny Derry of Woodward; Beverly and her husband, Jack Dailey of Albion, NE; Sharon and her husband, Gene Capps of Indianola; Cindy and her husband, Al Phillips of West Des Moines; Geri and her husband, Dana Tews of Bayard; and Kimberly and her husband, Dennis Patrick of Guthrie Center: Leon Eischeid and his wife, Cheryl of Bayard; and Mark Eischeid of Bayard. He is also survived by 52 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Audrey Smith of Bayard; two sisters: Mickey and her husband, John Schloss, of Strawberry Point and Rusty and her husband, Don Parr, of Marion, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
