Gary Fred Eischeid 1947-2009

Manning—Gary Fred Eischeid, 62, of Manning, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Rev. Robert Gralapp will officiate.

A rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. and a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial, with Military honors by the American Legion Ehlers Gerken Post No. 694, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3517 and the American Legion Emil Ewoldt Post No. 22, will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Manning.

Lectors for the Mass will be Roxanne Tigges and Karla Stork. Eucharistic minister will be Margaret Freese. Mass servers will be Ericka Tank and Tyler Muhlbauer. Gift bearers will be granddaughter, Olivia Eischeid and grandson, Gunner Eischeid. Accompanist will be Pat Heithoff.

Casket bearers will be Roy Harkrider, Denny Nielsen, Ralph Dobler, Keith Misselhorn, Craig Nielsen, Larry Eischeid, Paul Kasparbauer and Tom Smith.

A son of Hilbert "Hib" and Agnes (Steinkamp) Eischeid, he was born Oct. 15, 1947, at Carroll. He grew up on a farm north of Manning and attended Manning schools.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic in Thailand during the Vietnam War, performing maintenance on crew assigned B-52s. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa.

On Aug. 12, 1967, he married Marie Kasparbauer at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton.

The couple lived on farms north of Manning, and Mr. Eischeid farmed all his life. Later, when he cut back on farming, he became a welder for the Union Pacific Railroad.

He was diagnosed with sarcoma in July of 2008, however, he continued to work through harvest in the fall of 2009. He entered St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll in mid-December

He took great pride in his farm, meticulously landscaping and caring for his yard and pond. He enjoyed checking out the countryside and visiting with his many friends in the area and above all, spending time with his sons and their families.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning, the American Legion Post in Arcadia and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Manning.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Eischeid of Manning; two sons: Brian Eischeid and wife Melissa of Greenwood, Ind. and Brad Eischeid of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren: Mary Olivia, Jordan and Gunner; a great-grandson, Julian; a brother, Roger Eischeid and wife Diane of Templeton; a sister, Diane and husband Virgil Tigges of Carroll; his mother-in-law, Theresa Kasparbauer of Templeton; and sisters- and brothers-in-law: Theresa and Tom Smith of Milwau-kee, Wis., Margaurite Nielsen of Carroll, Annette and Rich Firkus of Stevens Point, Wis., Kathy Kasparbauer of Boulder, Colo., Paul Kasparbauer of Templeton and Shirley Kerber of Breda.

Mr. Eischeid was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
